Getting Your RIBO License
The RIBO ribo license is the license that insurance brokers in Ontario need to work. It’s a very important license because it lets you sell general insurance like home and car insurance in Ontario. In order to get your ribo license you need to pass the exam and gain employment at a RIBO-registered general insurance brokerage. Some brokerages will even front the cost of the RIBO exam for students.
RIBO is the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario, a self-regulatory body established in 1981 to protect the public during insurance transactions with brokers. It regulates the licensing, professional competence, ethical conduct and insurance related financial obligations of independent general insurance brokers in Ontario.

It also sets educational standards and administers exams to ensure that all brokers have met these requirements. One of the ways it does this is by setting 3 levels of RIBO licences that allow for different types of work. The RIBO entry level licence is the RIBO 1 license and the other two are RIBO 2 and RIBO management.
The RIBO Entry Level 1 license allows you to work as a broker but only under the supervision of someone with a RIBO 2 or higher licence. Once you’ve gained some experience you can move on to the RIBO Unrestricted Technical licence. This will allow you to sell a wider range of products and services but still under supervision.
You can then eventually become a RIBO Manager by passing the RIBO Unrestricted Management exam. The RIBO Management license will let you run your own insurance brokerage as the Principal Broker responsible for supervising those under you.
